Characodon                 lateralis

Kingdom: Animalia / animals

Class: Actinopterygii / arthropods

Order: Cyprinodontiformes / Toothpicks

Family: Goodeidae / live-bearing Mexican carp

Genus: Characodon

Type:  Characodon lateralis   (Günther, 1866)

Cultivation

It is grown in an aquarium full of plants and branched roots, many hiding places, filamentous algae and the like. Effective filtration and regular water changes are essential (20% per week). The ideal alkaline water temperature is between 21  at 23 ° C.

By raising the temperature, we shorten the lifespan of the fish. They can coexist with other live births and  ground fish.

Food

Fish is an omnivore. We feed it with frozen, lyophilized or fresh food of animal and plant origin.

Algae recommended, add a leaf of steamed spinach and the like.

Reproduction

The male begins to court the female in the characteristic "T" position. With outstretched fins and body shaking  trying to impress the female. Mating takes place when the male is placed on his head and shakes his whole body. The female bears 50-55 days, the number of young is between 10 and 15, rarely more. The young are between 7 and 12 mm in size. (more than less  so). The young immediately eat small live food (artemia).

Interesting

This species does not store sperm like most live births. Trophothenia performs a similar function as the placenta in mammals, in newly hatched pups we can observe the remains of the "umbilical cord", which soon disappears.

The fish is quite similar to the relative  Characodon Audax , both in shape and color. We know some populations that are different in appearance: "Los Berros", "Amado Nervo", "Nombre de Dios" (extinct), ... The fish are of olive-brown, green, red, blue and yellow with dark spots or without.

The alpha male defends his territory and in a small aquarium it can happen that the other male stays hungry and starts hiring (hence hiding places).
