Cultivation

Arrange an aquarium with lots of vegetation, a few roots and somewhere open space for swimming, water depth 20-40 cm. They can be accompanied by live-bearing animals, carcinids, razors and catfish that occupy the lower part of the aquarium, the fish of its area are: Oryzias nigrimas,   Oryzias nebulosus,  Mugilogobius sarasinorum, ... Always have a group of fish, one male and several females. Males are quite impatient and aggressive with each other. With a large enough aquarium and many hiding places and strong planting, we can have more males, other fish are in principle safe from attacks by territorial males. The fish have an elongated life, squeezed from the side. The upper jaw is slightly shorter than the lower, where it has a fleshy appendage.  Males have red with black bordered fins. Very similar  are species (Nomorhamphus brembachi and Nomorhamphus liemi) that differ mainly in color  (species are in different basic color shades of silver, blue, green and yellow, red fins have a black edge). The aquarium should be well covered because they like to jump out of the water.

Food

It feeds almost exclusively on live food, we patiently get used to frozen and lyophilized food (fleas, crabs, ...)

Reproduction

Viviparous, males are smaller and more colorful than females.

The male will fertilize  female as is typical of this family. Interestingly, the female gives birth to one to two pups a day over a period of time  one to two weeks. The fish are about 2.5 cm in size. We offer them plenty of live food and if the adults have enough food, the young are very safe, they have a strong predatory reflex, so it is better to isolate the female in an overgrown small aquarium before spawning. The young have both jaws of the same length. In the first week, we provide the young with the addition of vitamin D3 and calcium or UV light.
